Kid Goes to Brickyard

Warning This is Very Very Long Post .....

Kid: Your Truly who had as a kid following exploits of F1 Greats like Lauda, Prost & Senna in pre regular F1 coverage days always dreamt of seeing Formula one racing in flesh & Blood Closest was 90's when F1 started getting some coverage on TV .While in 80's All I had was monthly sports mag which carried stale stories of races that happened by .but which provided as good source of Podium finish Center spreads Of my Idol Alain Prost

Brickyard: As all F1 Junkie Friends know this cold .This is the what Indianapolis Speedway which constitutes one event on F1 Calendar. This track was relaid and made of Bricks in early racing days after initial Tar concrete track caused causalities a plenty

How all it started: all my Friends back in India told me to make a Indy Trip, way back in October2003 when I came to Chicago for current work assignment .The message "Mate You are close to Indy,so if you are around in US till next USGP DO GO !!!"

Ticket to Thrill: I was blissfully unaware that Race at Indy was pushed up nearly by 2 months (last year it was in September end) so when I was talking to my Client Manager(He had just been back from Indy 500) I realized that getting tickets @ such short notice was next to impossible

Impossible says I'm Possible: My Managers Friend had tickets ,so my manager promised me to check with him (this was june 10th) June 14th he fills me in that his friend had let go the tickets but my Project sponsor ( My Manager's Boss) is Having Some tickets ,gives me his number

I've talked with Jack ( my Boss's Boss) Only once before in October just passing introduction during our project kick off meeting. I'm bit tentative when I call. Luckily he has tickets

Got the tickets ..now the ride: I'm investigating various options even before I got tickets. Jack solves this problem as well He & his friend are planning to go to race in Jack's two-seater corvette. the Friend is dicey about his chances. So I get the seat

So some things that seemed So close yet so far indeed was going to be true !!!

The Day Before: Ferraris Take the pole positions so the writing is on the wall only question is will Barichello convert his pole position to top podium finish or Will Schummi "Manage" to subdue Barichello

The Night Before: I'm too excited about this whole F1 Trip and all ,Just Charged the Spare Batteries of my camera and waited for the my ride

Race Day 3:15 am: I'm all geared up ,and I hear "The Corvette" Entering my Apartment complex complete with roaring Firing of Engine et al. I Went down to meet Jack ,I'm seeing him Only the 2nd time. After greetings, we exchange the pole position updates from day before ,it turns out we both are rooting for Same Team "The Williams" and our Optimistic Strategy for race "Kamikaze Kid" Sato ,Challenging the Ferraris while "Mad Montoya" Does the trick for "Our Team"

Race Before The Race: Jacks Other Car is 1986 Corvette which has been Pace car @ Indy 500 in 1986,But today we are in Z06 which is very comfy Hardtop two seater. As we leave the city limits of Windy City behind I start seeing all the tricks that Corvette can do .to add to the Thrill we have company ,Another Z06 Corvette Electron Blue in color. After customary greetings from one corvette to other ,The Men Display the Limits of their machines ,We hit Maximum Speed between 120-130 mph with no traffic around to bother us. This was no race to outsmart, but pure fun and pride of the Machines the Men owned.

Deer in the Headlight Moment: this was not for the drivers or the riders of either of the Corvettes ,But for a Deer who was crossing the road when we were near Lafayette Indiana ( Home Of Purdue University). The Road was Two lane. We were going at 120mph at the moment of miss, our fellow corvette was around 400 meter behind us in other lane .the Deer in question was crossing the road and was at the lane divider marker. the speed at which we were going both Jack & I missed it, I spotted it just after we missed it and it was just on my side ..I said " Jack a Deer !!!..we.. we just passed it .." I think we just avoided hitting Deer crossing the road ,As we slowed while discussing about "Possible Deer which we missed by whisker" our Companions from other Corvette caught up with us " Driver asked me in Signs "Did u see that deer!!!" ..Yes Indeed it was Deer ... So We were Saved in nick of time coz @ 120 mph hitting the Deer needless so say would have ended our race prospects ...

Rest of Drive was pretty uneventful but for a Trailer whose Driver was having hard timing controlling it on the two lane road and we had to brake urgently ... Corvette has really Good Braking System thank God

Pit Stop : At 7:30 am Jack Has Ham off the Bone, Mahesh has Three Eggs Sunny Side up Corvette has high grade Heavy fuel ( refuel Strategy - as planned by Team Corvette)

At the tracks: Jack has Special Parking arrangement @ the Car Corral at S.E Corner ( Near Turn 9-10 on The race Track - See Photo Album for Track Map) All the Cars are Parked by Make .our Neighbor is Corvette which was 98 pace car @ Indy500.As we settled in came vintage cars( Ferrari/BMW/Viper/Lotus) these were later used as part of Parade when drivers made a lap before the race to greet fans. These vintage cars were a huge treat for Fan like me

Murphy Law Strikes: This time it was law 1 and 4 in combination :If anything can go wrong, it will & If there's a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will. The Impacted Object my camera ,I positively had charged main Battery on Friday Night and Spare one the Night Before. Previously I have made 3-4 Days long Trips with one Battery charged once & Camera used non stop ,So what are the Odds that my Camera indicates that both the batteries are running low on juices. If I can't take pictures I'll be kicking myself to death ,I'm smiling seeing things but am all nervous now (camera situation is really getting me)

History Of Car Racing: in USA is displayed at nice exhibition @ the Hall of Fame Museum ,I see all the replicas of Car, the gears, the protective(?) equipments used by Race Drivers .Took Customary picture of myself in Indy500 Car Model.I can't give good expression to the Camera ( How can I when failure of whole of my Photographic Expedition glares in face).

Great Gear Stands out against all the competitors: I had never been in this situation but I trusted my Camera & its Abilities It will survive this storm, I Go into total manual mode ( No LCD Previewing Auto Focusing all auto setting for Shutter Aperture ) I keep repeating to my self ,I'll survive !!!

Warm up: We had seats on two location one near turn one and other @ Terrace near Turn 6-7 .So We headed first to J Stand @ Turn one (see map)

11:15 am : I see crowd everywhere ,Its crowd of all Red Fans in Ferrari Colors ,Face paints and what not, Fans of other Team are fewer to be seen ,those donning Williams Colors like myself & Jack were like 5% of population ,just when I hear cheering around the Tracks ,We are in process of heading to our seats so don't know what's happening, it's the Drivers of Various Teams paraded in those vintage cars I mentioned before , I hear a small kid beside me telling to his Dad "That's the Best Team in the World" I Look at the kid Yes He is Sporting "My Colors" ,I look @ the Tracks to See Montoya & Ralf in vintage BMW I Cheered the kid ,Wished him luck for races ( Indeed we needed it)

11:45 am : after swimming in the Red( Ferrari Fan) Sea for what seemed like eternity We reached Our Seats in J Stand . as we took our seats Ralf & Montoya did warm up lap ,followed by Raikonnen, the atmosphere is electric, the family in front of us though was in midst of some domestic crisis with food gatherer not looking so happy that Hunter had not brought what she had asked for .Hunter was not happy to go again to fetch the stuff, Food gatherer Told him not to go as he'd miss the start of race ( what she meant was Get Going I want the stuff now )So the Hunter left in search.

12:00 Race starts : Murphy's Law which hit my camera hit Montoya. It was really funny scene on Giant Video screen ,to see him jump out of his car & run like robot in opposite direction when rest of the packed had sped off ...he looked like one of the motorcycle video games where the Rider does queer walk to his Bike after being thrown off it

Great Gear Stands out: that's what I said on seeing Montoya starting off pit lane in spare Car. So Williams had accounted for this contingency, but the car looked good in Warm up lap ( how the heck did this happen ) anyways all is well that ..... not so fast

Lap 1 : Action has just started ,safety car is deployed following the crash involving a crash involving Klein, Massa, Pantano and Bruni. (see PICS)

Lap 3 : Alonso had forged his way up the pack on race start and showing some amazing passing skills has put himself in third place behind ferraris

Lap 6 :Safety car leads the Race as the marshals are still busy clearing the debris from first crash (Why hasn't this race being restarted I start to wonder ..with track not clear and safe) Schummi passes the Race leader Barichello :-(

Lap 7 : Mad Montoya seems to be in on hell of hurry as he tries to make up lost ground, Crowd wildly cheer his maneuvers

Lap 8: Alonso crashes right in front of us the air is filled with smoke and smell of burnt tire. Alonso is helped out of his wrecked Renault and Camera crew let him in right in front of us ..his movements are all groggy as he stands looking at the race dejected ,Crowds in our stand (including red sea) clap and encourage him.Just then we hear a commotion on right ,We hear something about Ralf Schummi ( The Speed TV Commentary -Which we hear on radio) ,Ralf crashed on the walls on the last corner before the Start/Finish Line. The severity of crash I saw only in pictures in news the next day ..

The race is still in progress ,another yellow car. USGP circuit at Indy had safe record ever since it was introduced in F1 Circuit in year 2000.I'm really puzzled

As laps follow lap ,There is a talk of disqualification of Schummi for passing under Yellow at 6th lap.

Medical team has finally assisted RS to Hospital in Doing so the Ambulance does a lap of circuit ( wasn't there a quicker way out - I wonder ...especially from turn one where Tow cranes, safety marshals, maintenance vehicles were deployed rather then taking the entire lap and in turn putting other drivers in tough spot as well)Crowds gave Ovation to RS while he was taken in Ambulance to Hospital

The race is pretty much settled now Ferraris are still leading with Montoya & Sato challenging the leaders

Good Prediction : Lap 24 Jensen Button came out of Pit stop and passed in front of us ,the car is makes a funny noice as he negotiates turn 1-2 I said to Jack ,His Gearbox is having problem .I don't think he will make it thru all the laps ...another Lap and Button Retires from Race .Commentary Team confirms Gear Problems ..should I be happy or be sad ..none of the other teams have a serious Machine to challenge the Ferrari ..its such a shame

Lap 30 : We decide to watch remaining race from our other tickets @ Turn 6-7 ,So we head to the Terrace @ 6th turn

Terrace: this great spot especially for photography junkies one has clear view of all action on corner 4-5-6-7 so can plan to take good pictures of "their teams"...Unfortunately in my case ..though I'm taking my pictures ,I can't review my results also with Alonso & Ralf out of race I've pretty much lost track to things happening around me One great Con of the current seating position though is that None of the Giant Screens face this terrace - So One can't see current timing positions and some action on other parts of track

Lap 58 :We had been hearing this talk for quite sometimes but now its official, race stewards Black flag Mad Montoya....This is Outright Stupid and unfortunate ....Reason given: he didn't indicate his car failure on grid in 15 seconds. They expect 15 second from him ,but themselves took nearly 90 plus minutes ...he is so true to express his anger

The Young Colorado Couple sitting next to me are visibly dejected. when I filled them about Montoya Black flagged and the lady was all the more in Distress when we updated her about Ralf's bruised back .The Couple seemed big F1 junkie as they had headed straight from Canadian GP to Indy .apparently the Canadian-Indy Double header suited their vacation plans better unlike last year when they gave Indy a miss over Canadian GP .When we confirmed that Montoya is heading to Mclaren in 2005 he confided that "In that case we will trade in our Z5 for Merc Sports Car" Man Oh Man

My theory : Montoya with his Indy500 record et al is huge crowd puller on this track, So Authorities didn't want to dampen the crowd spirit which was anyways down seeing all the crashes and haphazard manner in which the incident handling was done

Writing on the wall turns true: MS "Manages" to Lead Ferrari to another victory ahead of Barichello

MS-RB Do Victory Lap : Duhh ....

And we head back to windy city

Team Corvette Race Strategy : Double pit stop one for Caffeine Fuel and second for Snack fuel.

What goes inside Car: Jack has tons of knowledge on Technology aspect of Race Cars so someone who is statistically loaded with information on Car Racing learnt so many intricacies from him

Will Murphy Strike again ?: @ second pit stop the Car gave us a scare when it refused to start. 10 minutes later it changed mind
Indeed Great Gear Stands out against all the cheap competitors

New Dream : Jack shared his experience of Race car driving lessons on Open top Formula Ford Car .So I have started visualizing the life in fast lane

That Night : in my dreams I saw myself negotiating T1-T2 T9-T10 at Indy Circuit in Race Car Of course

Passing .Shot : Indeed Great Gear Stands out against all the cheap competitors!!even with Low Battery Team Canon Successfully completed the race !! For Results

The Embers within

In the Dying moments of night when my strength bids adieu. It leaves me shivering in bitter Alien cold. The Ashes shrouding the embers fail to invoke the warmth in the embers deep within too weak to drag myself & blow away the ashes, rekindle the embers, I succumb to the bitterness around me.

Half alive half dead I lie on the threshold of reality and illusion. When out of nowhere comes gentle breeze, breeze that bring sweet memories of days gone by!!!vitality & strength in it just enough to free the embers from the bonds of hostile ashes

A simple prop to occupy my mind, as I wait for the Center of life to rise up the horizon and instill my faith and trust in its eternal spirit
